Sandbridge

Sandbridge is a local’s favorite beach. Sandbridge is a peaceful community with year round resident families, as well as boasting many seasonal rental homes in Virginia Beach. The five mile beach of Sandbridge is located just south of where the typical Virginia Beach vacationer may stay, but seemingly a million miles away from all of the hustle and bustle of the tourist traffic.

Sandbridge residents and visitors ride their bikes along the beach roads, take morning jogs on the road and on the lifeguard watched beaches. The children of Sandbridge enjoy the family atmosphere Sandbridge allows, and growing up at the beach is a special treat that not many kids in the United States get to do.

Sandbridge boasts several dining options for residents and visitors including Baja Restaurant, The Bay View Lounge, Fanzo’s Yogurt, and The Sandbridge Restaurant.

Sandbridge is probably most known for Little Island Fishing Pier located at the southern end of Sandbridge. Locals and guests enjoy surf fishing from the beach and from the pier at Little Island. Swimming is not allowed under or near the pier for the swimmer’s safety. The pier opens at 5:30am and closes at 11pm.

If you are looking to purchase a home that feels like a resort, but isn’t in the heart of the hustle and bustle then Sandbridge could be the beach for you. With the peaceful atmosphere down at the beach, you can also find wonderful golf courses a short driving distance away. After all, Virginia Beach is a resort city, and what resort city wouldn’t have wonderful golf courses!

Local surfers enjoy the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean where it meets Sandbridge. Of course, Sandbridge doesn’t have Hawaiian waves, but then again, we aren’t located over yonder in the Pacific Ocean are we? The waves are just right for locals. So, if you are an avid surfer, or if you ever wanted to learn, move to Sandbridge. Someone will gladly teach you how to surf. There are also several surfing instructors available in the area, just Google them.

If you have children, they will enjoy body boarding / boogie boarding in the surf near the shore. After a few wipe outs, the “newbies” will get the hang of the whole idea, and oh what fun they will have! Lifeguards are on duty during beach season from 9am – 6pm.

Sandbridge is also surrounded by local and state parks including Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, False Cape State Park, and Little Island Park. -These wonderful parks with amazing wild life and water fowl could be the reason that fires are not permitted on Sandbridge beach at any time.

As another safety precaution, glass containers are not allowed on the beach. No one wants to run bare footed in the waves only to step on a piece of broken glass. Alcohol is also not permitted on the public beaches. Sandbridge is a friendly family community, and the residents, as well as the city, strive to keep it that way.

The resident children of Sandbridge attend Red Mill Elementary School, Princess Anne Middle School, and Kellam High School. Kellam High School is home to just over 1800 students each year. Kellam High School is also home to the Girl’s Volleyball 2010 State Champions, the Boy’s Golf 2010 State Champions, and the Gymnastics 2010 State Champions. Go Kellam!

Sandbridge is where I always take my kids to play at the beach. We have lived in Virginia Beach all of our lives, and I just prefer Sandbridge to the resort beach because there is less traffic, and less walking after you park your car. In Sandbridge, you can park your car just across the street from the beach, no parking garages and other “city” headaches to deal with. Great post!
