Ghent is filled with historic homes, fascinating attractions, and like much of our area, is filled with history.

Ghent was developed in the late 1800′s on over 200 acres of land. It was home to many of Norfolk’s upper crust, who built large mansions with gorgeous views.

In an area of it’s age, revitalization is necessary, and Ghent has been undergoing a face lift for many years now. The homes are just as prestigious and beautiful as ever. Some of the former mansions have been transformed into apartments. Condos and single family homes are all in between.-But there are still homes in need of restoration, if you would like to make one of these historic homes your own.

Ghent is now considered two parts, East Ghent and West Ghent. Each has their own Neighborhood Civic League. The residents involved in the Civic League gather to help keep Historic Ghent full of life and beautiful for another 100 years. Ghent offers a variety of community events, especially around each Holiday. You can view a calendar of their events online.

With so many federal, city, and private employers nearby, Ghent is the perfect place to live and ride your bike or walk to work. On a rainy day, public transportation is available.

In Ghent you will have access to the new Norfolk light rail system. With five stations downtown, you’ll be within easy walking distance to your destination -wherever that may be. The Tide takes less than a half hour to travel from downtown Norfolk to Virginia Beach. Passes are currently available in increments of 30 days, one trip, or one day with unlimited use.
